Introduction

GO-71 - This problem is adapted from CPM Foundations for Algebra Year 2.

Dezzirae's oldest brother Kalani has saved enough money to buy a car. Kalani told Dezzirae, "Buying a car will actually be a good investment. I can buy it now and sell it when I need the money back. Except for buying gas, it will be almost free because I can get all my money back when I sell it."

Dezzirae exclaimed, "Kalani, I think you should collect some information before you make that kind of statement. Investing your money in a car is not a good idea!"

"I don't agree with you Dezzirae!" Kalani replied.

Task

Collect, organize, and analyze some data to help Dezzirae and Kalani settle their disagreement.

Your team needs to collect data on the prices of used cars. You can find this information in the want ads of the newspaper or using the online resources below. Your teacher will select a manufacturer and model of car from the list below. This should be a model of car that has been produced for a few years. Split the work among your team so that you can collect the data as quickly as possible. One member of the team should use a table like the one below to record the data for the team. You will want to have at least 15 entries in your table. There should be no more than three entries from any year. Once you have collected the data, each team member needs to copy the data table.

Group Number Manufactuer Model
1
Toyota Camry
2
Honda Accord
3
Ford Taurus
4
Honda Civic
5
Jeep Wrangler
6
Volkswagen Jetta
7
Chevrolet Camaro
8
Acura Integra
9
Nissan Maxima
10
Subaru Outback

Process

  1. What is the range in the prices of your data? What is the range in the ages of the cars? Use this information to scale the axes on the graph you will create in part 2.
  2. Enter the data on the graph. Do not connect the points. This is called a scatter plot. The horizontal axis should be labeled Age of Car in Years and the vertical axis should be labeled Cost of Car (in dollars). The horizontal axis should have a scale that starts at zero and increases by 2 and the vertical axis should have a scale that starts at zero and increases by 2000. Using graph paper may make it easier for you to plot the data.
  3. Examine the points on your scatter plot. Does there appear to be a relationship between the age of the car and the cost of the car? Using complete sentences, describe what you see.

Evaluation

Based on your scatter plot, what information would you give Dezzirae and Kalani to help them settle their agreement? Can Kalani get all his money back if he sells his car in a couple of years?

Conclusion

Explain why it would have been beneficial for Dezzirae and Kalani to collect and graph some data before getting into an argument.
